Got a little more time?
Some of Dorset's best scenery can be enjoyed from the road. These are two of our favourite relaxed drives from The Drift House - perfect when you want to explore without planning a full day out.
Allow: 1½–2½ hours with stops
Best for: Sea views • Photography • Sunset • An easy afternoon outing
A lovely short drive when you want to enjoy the coast without planning a full day out. Cross beside Chesil Beach and Portland Harbour, climb onto the Isle of Portland for wonderful panoramic views, then continue through the island to the iconic Portland Bill Lighthouse.
Our tip: Take your time and stop at the viewpoints along the way. It's particularly beautiful later in the day when the light falls across Chesil Beach.
Allow: 2–3 hours with stops
Best for: Jurassic Coast scenery • Countryside • Photography • A relaxed afternoon
One of our favourite leisurely drives from Weymouth. Head west through the Dorset countryside towards the pretty village of Abbotsbury, then follow the B3157 as it rises above the coast.
The reward is one of Dorset's great views - Chesil Beach sweeping into the distance with Portland beyond.
Stop in Abbotsbury for a gentle wander or coffee, then continue to the viewpoint on Abbotsbury Hill before making your way back to Weymouth.
Our tip: Don't rush this one. It's all about the journey, the changing landscape and stopping when a view catches your eye.
Enjoy an ice cream away from the busiest part of the beach.
Perfect after an evening stroll.
